The Graham Windham School, located in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York is an intensive needs school. The idea of the studio was to create a school based on a mixture of pedagogies. The idea for the addition was to be a school born from the free ideas of Henry David Thoreau's Walden, the Waldorf School learning environment and the Settlement House idea, combining a rural/individual and urban/group environment. The addition was a cafe/cafeteria gallery space situated in the middle of the schools existing cottage style learning classrooms, creating a new town center for the school, and much needed group spaces. The other part of the school were cabins situated in the woods, along the lines of Walden. The terrain and existing plan of the school enabled this design intervention. The new intervention completes the already existing Graham-Windham School.
